The AAS Crop Scouting Approach

What makes our crop scouting methods more effective?

Advanced Ag Solutions crop scouting service combines precisely scheduled and documented field visits with professional recommendations from our Certified Crop Advisor Regional Agronomists.

Our crop scouts are college interns who are perusing careers in an agronomic field. They are motivated to learn and gain field experience. They walk fields every week, making electronic GPS logs every 10 acres or so. Our scouts then wirelessly upload their observations to our servers via Workflow. Our GIS Tech double checks their notes and measurements and prepares a report that is then emailed to the farmer client as quickly as possible. This email is copied to the Regional Agronomist, landlord or anyone else that the farmer authorizes to view. Anyone of these people can read or revisit the GPS points logged. By having multiple people involved, this helps you make input and application timing decisions that boost your bottom line.

We bring a pro-active approach as opposed to a re-active approach. We will find pests, watch them develop and help you respond quickly and accurately... besides providing flexibility in product purchase sources. Spray yourself and lower your cost. It all adds up to in-season and post-season improvements.

Melissia Grant

Melissia Grant will be a junior at Purdue University in the fall of 2012, pursuing a double major in Agriculture Education and Sustainable Agronomic Management. She is from Greenfield, Indiana and enjoys spending time with her family and traveling the world. While studying at Purdue she has had the opportunity to travel to Jamaica for a study abroad experience to better understand global agriculture. And in May she will be spending nearly a month in Ireland to learn about multiculturalism in the education system. At Purdue Melissia competes on the Purdue’s Collegiate Crops Judging Team and is a member of Sigma Alpha. Growing up she was heavily involved in showing swine in 4-H, and later became the 2010 Hancock County Fair Queen. Working with agronomy has always been a passion of hers since she got involved with crops judging in her high schools FFA program. While working over the summer she hopes to gain in field experience so she can someday better educate her students in the agriculture classroom.

Elliott Gruss

Elliott Gruss was raised near Ossian, Indiana, a small farm community. He grew up on his family farm of about 300 acres. For a short time, he helped his family raise cattle and alfalfa. However, 90% of the production on the farm came from winter wheat, corn, and soybeans. Elliott attended two different high schools, Norwell for his freshman and sophomore years and then his last two years were spent at Bishop Luers. During his high school career Elliott was a member of the FFA and Captain of the Bishop Luers lacrosse team. After high school, he started college as a biology major with the aspirations of going into the medical field. Upon completing a year and a half of college, Elliott realized agriculture is in his roots and that is where his interest lies and is the field he wants to study. At this point he transferred from the University of Indianapolis to Purdue University where he is currently a Junior working his way towards a degree in agronomy business and marketing.

Elliott is really looking forward to the internship with Advanced Ag Solutions. He is excited to see all the ins and outs of the growing season, to really understand the nature of crops, to learn more about how to maintain crops and how to produce the highest yields. He hopes to come out of this summer much more knowledgeable then he went in and would like to be able to apply what he learns to his own farm.

Haley Jenkins

Haley Jenkins is currently a senior at Purdue University graduating this December with a bachelor of science in Agribusiness Management, a minor in Animal Sciences, and certificates in Leadership Development Certificate Program, Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Certified in the IQ+BEEF Program (BQA). She grew up on the family grain farm where they also raise cattle, hogs in Frankton, Indiana. She is still highly involved in the family farm and helping her younger siblings with their 4-H projects. She was an 8 year 4-H member showing rabbits, hogs, cattle, and dogs, and was also a member of her FFA where she judged livestock and soil, and was quite successful in livestock judging. Here past experiences include working in a feed store and learning all about customer service skills and acquiring the knowledge on operating a small business, as well as being a field scout where she was able to enhance her agronomy knowledge. Through this internship at Advanced Ag Solutions Haley plans on enhancing her knowledge on agronomy, sales, and marketing. In hope that it will help her upon her graduation, find a permanent position in sales, management or marketing in the field of Agriculture.

Cale is hoping to improve his skills and gain more knowledge with this hands on agronomy experience so he can be a valuable asset to his family farm someday.

Kelsey Tuholski

Kelsey Tuholski just concluded her freshman year at Purdue University majoring in Soil and Crop Science and minoring in Farm Management. She was her high school’s valedictorian and is a Lilly Scholar. Kelsey has stayed involved at Purdue as a member of the Agronomy Club, a soil laboratory assistant, and by becoming the first ever woman to compete on the Purdue men’s lacrosse team. Through her experience as an intern at Advanced Ag Solutions, Kelsey hopes to lay groundwork for her future in the field of agriculture by expanding her expertise in field scouting, broadening her knowledge of economical and practical agronomic solutions to producers’ needs, and developing valuable relationships through effective consulting and marketing. After graduating from Purdue, Kelsey aspires to be an agronomic consultant while managing her own grain farm.
