Decisions in 2009: Let’s get started!
While the 2009 crop year is now a glimmer in someone’s eye, it’s a black hole for many. Costs have skyrocketed, price volatility is severe and competition for land is fiercer than ever. What do you do?
Don’t be frozen by fear!
Preparation for 2009 began in the fall of 2006 for many of our clients.
“Since the fall of 2006, overall farm profit is not as important as profit relative to your neighbor,” says company President, Daryl Starr. “The smart got stronger faster and have controlled their greed along the way. They boosted and maintained higher liquidity. They will better weather the supplier squeeze of 2009,” he concludes.
Tips for 2009:
1. Perform a financial analysis and benchmark against competition. You’re good, but are you better?
2. Determine how you will mitigate risk through simple, written, financial, marketing, and operational strategies.
3. Analysis data from each of YOUR farms. Yields, Soil Tests, Crop Scouting Reports, etc.
4. Adjust your strategy based on your performance.
5. Consider value of third party perspective to compliment your weaknesses. Where are you short? Do you know?
6. Forget working on your weaknesses. Instead, outsource these areas and focus energy on becoming the best at your strengths.
